Domenico Scarlatti sonatas — graphical scores
My first first animated graphical scores were of J. S. Bach's music, but Domenico Scarlatti's keyboard
sonatas were soon to follow: his D major sonata K. 96 appeared on the VHS tape I released in 1990
(Program 1 on the later compilation DVD),
and his G major sonata K. 455 was one of the pieces I
uploaded on my first day on YouTube in 2005.
The Scarlatti videos I posted before 2012 were all based on my own performances, because I didn't
have a way to synchronize my animations to other people's recordings. After I figured out how to do
that, I started using other people's recordings, starting with one by Colin Booth
(who I've collaborated
with many times since then).
Most of the videos I've made are based on performances on harpsichord, and a dozen or so are on piano,
but quite a few are on other instruments, including both keyboard instruments (clavichord, fortepiano,
square piano, and organ) and others: guitar (both solo and duet), mandolin, and even accordion!
The animations from before 2018 are all very simple: an unadorned piano-roll style display. After that,
I started experimenting more, and developing visual techniques to show things about the music beyond
just the notes. I also got more productive: before 2021, I'd only done a dozen Scarlatti sonatas, but I did
more than that in 2021, and in 2022 I did 37. To date, I've made videos for 112 of the 555 sonatas.
If you'd like to watch all the videos (in order by K. number),
here's the YouTube playlist.
