Requests for custom animation

Occasionally, I do a piece of custom animation for somebody, either as a paid commission or because it's something I'm interested in (or both).

Here are a few I've done on the past:

  • 1991 David McCutchen (California), Chopin, Etude opus 10 #4, collaboration, Flat Out ($500 + expenses)
  • 1991 Kim Chang Man (Korea), various, Korean children's songs, exploratory business venture (gratis)
  • 1996 Del Tonguette (Mississippi), Program for Gulfnet (released commercially in 2001 as the 1996 Demonstration Reel) ($1000 + expenses)
  • 2001 David Miller (Berkeley), Debussy, Claire de lune (gratis)
  • 2006 Tyler Merideth (Tennessee), Lennox Berkeley, Kyrie from Mass for Five Voices ($100)
  • 2007 YouTube user mercoid (USA), John Bull, In Nomine (gratis)
  • Requirements

Here's what I need to do a music visualization:

  • Permission.  If the piece was written after 1921, it is likely to be protected by copyright.  If it is not your own composition (or mine), I would want you to get permission from the copyright holder before I began work on the animation.
  • An audio recording of the piece.  The easiest is if you have made a MIDI file performance of the piece; in this case, you can create an audio recording from that.  If it is a piece I can perform myself (on a single keyboard instrument), I might be able to record it.  Otherwise, you would need to find somebody to perform it or get permission to use a recording.
  • A MIDI recording of the piece.  This MIDI recording needs to be perfectly synchronized with the audio recording.  This is the case when the audio was created from a MIDI file; otherwise, it would take you a lot of work to create it.  And, of course, if the MIDI file is by someone other than you or me, you'll need their permission to use it.
  • Motivation.  If I like a piece of music, I am much more likely to want to do a visualization of it, even without other motivations.  If a visualization is going to be used in in interesting context (for example, as part of a public performance or installation), that can motivate me.  So can money (though less right at the moment, since I have a lot of projects queued up and little free time).
  • If you would like me do a custom animation for you and believe you can supply these things, please write me.
