Equipment

The source for dynamics, articulation, and tone quality is one of my violas, fitted with a Barcus Berry 3100 Clamp-On Bridge Violin Piezo Pickup ...

... the output of which goes into an M-Audio Audio Buddy ...

... which boosts the signal enough to serve as the audio input to a Roland VP-550 Vocal/Ensemble Keyboard vocoder ...

I listen to the output of the VP-550 on Fuze Custom Fit Molded Earphones, with my ears covered with AOSafety - Peltor Hearing Protector so that I can't hear the live viola ...

This diagram shows the signal flow ...

All the instrumental parts except for the one I'm performing/recording are being played (using sampled instrumental sounds) by the Sibelius notation software; the MIDI pitches for the part I'm playing on the viola are sent from Sibelius to the VP-550, where they are combined with the spectral envelope from the viola. The VP-550's output is recorded (for later inclusion in the final audio mix) and mixed with the Sibelius audio output; that's what I'm hearing while performing (because of the ear protection, I'm not hearing the live viola sound).
